ARES Training on Mesh

The Albemarle, Charlottesville, UVA Amateur Radio Emergency Services (ARES) group held a practice session on using 5.8 GHz mesh at Albemarle Square Shopping Center on Saturday October 19, 2019.

A photo sent as a Winlink email attachment using a peer-to-peer mesh connection. Sending the image to multiple recipients took only a few seconds via a mesh network.

Participants in the exercise were K4DND, N4PGS, KE4LWT, WD3O, KN4LYF and KK4JP and they set of a variety of directional and omnidirectional models of radio from MikroTik and Ubiquiti Networks that had been upgraded with AREDN (Amateur Radio Emergency Digital Network) firmware to operate on ham frequencies.
