2007 Summary of ARES and Virginia Emergency Management

On Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2007, Dave Damon, K4DND, and Bill Phillips, AD6JV, gave a presentation summarizing the current state of emergency management in Virginia as pertains involves amateur radio and how local hams can get involved in emergency preparedness. Dave began the presentation by talking about the organization of ARES both nationwide and in Virginia, stressing what individual hams as well as clubs can do to get involved. Bill continued by explaining what would actually happen to "activate" hams in the event of an emergency, including nets and phone trees. He also previewed some of the emergency drills scheduled for 2007 as well as several public service events. Finally, Cayman Brownfield, KG4OVD, talked about the recent installation of amateur equipment at several Red Cross shelters in Virginia.
